The summer months are quickly approaching. We know that the season of summer is a popular time for couples to tie the knot. Many couples believe that summer is the ideal season to hold their wedding, due to the weather, lush scenery, and it allows couples to take advantage of their venue. As wedding planners, summer is our busiest season, we often are double booked through the weekend and are planning weddings throughout the summer. We’ve learned a few things from our experiences with the season – so let’s dive into navigating a summer wedding.
Often when people think of a summer wedding, they automatically think of an outdoor wedding. Whether you chose to host your ceremony, reception, or both outside there are a few important points for you to think about. Weather can be hit or miss. Be sure to have a backup plan for your venue if it is outdoor. You most likely picked your date to celebrate in the sunshine, but let’s face it - weather happens. Talk to your venue coordinator and or wedding planner to discuss a backup plan. The last thing you want is to have your guests stuck in the rain.
On the opposite side of the spectrum, create a plan for the rising temperatures. Summer months can bring hot weather. Plan and execute ways to keep your guests cool. We’ve seen couples use mini fans, misters, personal fans, or even offer beverages prior to the ceremony to keep guests hydrated. You can also turn your ceremony cards into the perfect personal fan with a little popsicle stick. Whatever you do, don’t make the mistake and assume that the weather on your wedding day will be the perfect temperature and climate. Plan for the heat or cool, with the end goal in mind of not only keeping your guests comfortable but making the event comfortable and enjoyable for you and your wedding party too.
One of the perks of planning a summer wedding is the opportunity to use your venue and space at its fullest capacity. When searching for venues, keep the season in mind. Don’t be afraid to utilize the whole space and make the best of your venue. Many couples choose to set up different activities for the cocktail and the reception. Or use the trees for some extra shade for your guests during the ceremony. Use your ceremony space wisely and plan on utilizing the features of your venue. Some of our favorite venue add-ons to make the space extra fun in these summer months are:
Firepit: We love a good fire pit. So many memories occur around the fire and you can create a cozy space for the reception and include some yummy snacks. I mean, who doesn’t love a s’mores station!
Lawn Games: Lawn games are an excellent reception or cocktail hour addition. Make the best use of the lawn or open space in your venue to create a fun area for all ages. Guests will stay entertained and be able to interact throughout your event.
Dance Floor: Have you ever seen a dance floor under the stars? Rental companies often rent floating dance floors. Check with your venue and create a dance floor under the night sky. Add some twinkle lights or Italian light bulbs for some extra flair.
Not only can you create fun and interactive spaces for your guests using the layout of your venue, but when it comes to decor– let your summer venue speak for itself! Venues in the summer blossom, literally. Many venues have features that are only available during the summer months. Ask your venue for pictures of summer weddings, so you can see what the landscaping looks like! The best part is if your venue is outdoors, you can use nature around you to enhance your wedding day. You’re able to save money on a florist and utilize what is around you. We’re thinking of flower pots, gardens, and even trees! Great creative with your space and think about how you can use your venue’s natural beauty on your wedding day.
When it comes to attire, keep the weather in mind. As you search for your perfect wedding dress or wedding party attire, keep this word in mind: comfortable. Think about how your body regulates temperature and plan accordingly. You don’t want to be sweating it out on the dance floor. Plan your hairstyles with summer in mind, too. Yes, you may love yourself a down-do, but you may want to opt for a stylish braided updo to stay comfortable and cool. For the groom and groomsmen, search for outfits that provide options. You may want to ditch the coat at the reception, so shop with these adjustments in mind. Now, if you’re planning your wedding in the heat of the summer, think about swapping to a reception dress. With this option, you can keep it classic for the wedding and main portion of the reception, but switch to something comfortable and cool for the dancing.
Not only are summer weddings popular, but they offer endless opportunities to utilize the venue to its fullest. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box and plan some additional outdoor entertainment for your guests. Work to keep your guests hydrated and comfortable throughout the event, by preparing for the heat, or summer storm. And, keep your event natural by using the natural beauty of the venue around you.
